Privacy Policy

This describes exactly what SeaConnect collects when you plan a route, log a voyage, or ask nearby sailors for help — and what we never do with it. No advertising IDs, no analytics trackers, no data brokers.

In short: SeaConnect is built by a single independent developer, not a company with an ad business. We collect the account, boat, and location details needed to plot sea routes, log voyages, and connect sailors for safety features like live position sharing and SOS broadcasts. We don't run analytics SDKs, ad networks, or cross-app tracking — there's nothing here to sell.
01

Account information

When you create a SeaConnect account, we (via Firebase Authentication) collect:

  • email address and password — password is hashed by Firebase and never visible to us
  • first name and last name

This is the minimum needed to sign you in and identify you to other sailors you interact with in the app.

02

Content you add

Your profile and activity in SeaConnect are built from things you choose to enter:

  • Boat details — name, brand, model, length
  • Photos — a profile avatar and boat photos you upload, stored in Firebase Storage
  • Stories — a photo you take or choose and an optional caption, shown for 24 hours on your profile and on your marker on the Routes map, then deleted automatically along with the photo. You can delete a story sooner yourself
  • Home Waters — up to five coastal places you mark as where you sail most, each checked against a coastline dataset so only real sea-adjacent spots are saved
  • Sailor reviews — star ratings and comments you leave on coves and sea caves
  • Voyage posts — distance, duration, top speed, wind and weather conditions, and an optional caption when you choose to share a completed voyage to the Voyages feed. Exclusive members can also choose to include the voyage's route, so others can watch it back as a Voyage Rewind
  • Chat messages — sent directly to other sailors you message in-app
  • Instagram handle — optional, shown on your profile if you add one (Exclusive members)

Location data

SeaConnect is a marine navigation app, so location is central to how it works. We use your device's GPS in five distinct, separately-triggered ways:

Route planning
Your chosen origin/destination coordinates are sent to our routing service to calculate a sea route. If you're not an Exclusive member, the start and end points (to about 1 km) of up to three routes you check in Best Time to Sail are saved to your account to count your free plans; only you can see them, and they're deleted with your account.
Always on when you calculate a route
Voyage tracking
While a voyage is running, live position, speed, and heading are read to show your instruments and log distance travelled. When you finish a voyage, a summary — route names, distance, duration, speeds, weather, the planned route, and the Discover coves and sea caves you passed — is saved privately to your Voyage Log, whether or not you share it, so you can look back on it, share it later, and earn badges. Only you can see it unless you share it. A simplified GPS track (about one point every quarter mile) is saved with it only until your badges for that voyage are worked out, then deleted. Everything is deleted with your account.
Active only during a started voyage
Live position sharing
Broadcasts your current position to other signed-in sailors so they can see you on the Routes map. While the app is open you show as "Now"; after you leave, your last shared position stays visible with how long ago you were last seen (for example "10m"), until 6 days have passed — "5d" is the last label shown before it disappears. Turning sharing off removes it immediately.
Off by default — you turn it on in Profile
Drop Anchor
Your current position is sent to our servers, which look up the coastline around it from OpenStreetMap and tonight's wind from Open-Meteo to rate how sheltered the spot is, and suggest calmer coves nearby. While you're anchored, the spot is saved to your account so Watch Anchor and hourly Anchor Watch alerts can check it; it's removed when you weigh anchor. We also keep a count of the anchor drops you've used. Exclusive members can also use Perfect Drop, which looks for the calmest spot in the bay around where you're anchored for tonight's wind; if you re-anchor there, the saved spot moves to your current position, without using a drop. The depth you can enter for chain advice stays on your device.
Only when you tap Drop Anchor
SOS / Ask for Help
A one-time location snapshot sent with a help request, which notifies sailors near you by push notification — first those within about 25 nautical miles, widening to 50 nautical miles, and to every sailor if no one nearby can be reached. To work out who is nearby, your SOS location is compared with positions other sailors have recently shared through live position sharing. If you reply to an SOS, or someone replies to yours, each message in that conversation is also sent to the other person as a push notification.
Only sent when you tap Ask for Help

Foreground location only. SeaConnect does not track your position in the background or after you close the app — this matches the "When In Use" permission iOS grants it, and we've made no request for "Always" location access.

Third-party services

To do things a single developer can't build from scratch — mapping, weather, seafloor charts — SeaConnect sends narrow, purpose-specific requests to these providers. None of them receive your name, email, or account identity alongside this data.

ServiceWhat it receivesWhy
Google Firebase Account credentials, profile content, chat messages, uploaded photos Authentication, database, and file storage that power the appcore infrastructure
Google Maps Platform Search text and coordinates you enter when picking a place or marina Place search and nearby-marina results
Mapbox Map viewport coordinates as you pan and zoom, and the bounds of any Offline Maps area you download Renders the on-screen chart, always labeled in English regardless of device language, and supplies the map tiles saved for offline use. Offline areas, their cove photos and their saved wind stay on your device
Open-Meteo (requested through our own servers) Your current coordinates during an active voyage, a few points along a route you check in Best Time to Sail, and the position you check with Drop Anchor (and nearby coves it compares) Live wind speed and air temperature readings, and the wind, wave and weather forecasts used to score departure times
OpenStreetMap (Overpass API, requested through our own servers) Only if our own copy of the OpenStreetMap coastline can't be read: the position you check with Drop Anchor or Perfect Drop (and nearby coves it compares) The coastline around it, used to work out which directions the spot is open to
Wikimedia Commons and Unsplash Your device's network address when cove photos load or are saved with an offline map area Host the cove and sea-cave photos
OpenTopoData (GEBCO) Your current coordinates during an active voyage Charted seafloor depth at your position — survey data, not a live sonar reading
Expo push service A per-device push token and the notification's text, which can include another sailor's name and, for a comment, the comment itself — for example an SOS alert, a message in an SOS conversation, a new follower, a like or comment on your voyage, or an Anchor Watch alert about tonight's wind where you're anchored Delivers push notifications (e.g. a nearby SOS, a reply to one, someone following you or reacting to your voyage, or a change in tonight's wind where you're anchored)
No advertising or analytics SDKs
SeaConnect has no ad network, no analytics/tracking library, and no data broker relationships. Nothing you do in the app is used to build an advertising profile, on this app or any other.
05

Sharing with other sailors

SeaConnect is a community app, so some of what you add is visible to other users by design:

  • Public to all signed-in users: your name, avatar, boat details, sailor reviews, who you follow and who follows you (with follower and following counts), any story you post, for the 24 hours it's up, and any voyage you post to the Voyages feed, with any badges it earned — including its route, if you've shared it as a Voyage Rewind. Your badges, and the badge progress behind them (total distance sailed, number of voyages, and how many coves, sea caves and countries you've sailed), are also visible on your profile.
  • Visible to all signed-in users, only when you choose to share it: your live position while sharing is turned on (and, after you leave the app, your last shared position and last-seen time until 6 days have passed), and your location if you send an SOS.
  • Private, between two people: direct chat messages are readable only by the sender and recipient.

We do not sell or rent any of this information to outside parties.

06

Retention & deletion

Your data is kept for as long as your account exists. From Profile → Delete Account, you can permanently delete your profile document and your Firebase Authentication account yourself, in-app, at any time — no support request needed. Content you've shared with others (a review, a voyage post, a chat message) may remain visible to the people it was already shared with, attributed to a removed account, in the same way a message doesn't unsend once read. Deleting your account also deletes your voyage logs, your badges, your Drop Anchor session (where you're anchored and the anchor drops you've used), the route ends kept to count your free Best Time to Sail plans, your Voyage Log visibility setting, and any story still up, with its photo. Offline maps, their cove photos and their saved wind are stored only on your device: delete them from Offline Maps, or by removing the app.

07

Your choices

  • Turn off live position sharing anytime in Profile — you stop appearing on other sailors' maps immediately.
  • Hide your Voyage Log from other sailors with the "Show voyages on my profile" switch in Profile → Voyages. Voyages you've posted stay on the Voyages feed until you delete them.
  • Revoke location access in iOS Settings → SeaConnect at any time; route planning and voyage tracking will ask again when needed.
  • Revoke photo library or camera access the same way; you just won't be able to add new boat photos or story photos.
  • Turn off push notifications in iOS Settings if you'd rather not be notified of nearby SOS calls, messages, new followers, likes and comments on your voyages, or Anchor Watch alerts while you're anchored.
  • Correct or remove your profile fields, boat details, and Home Waters directly in the Profile tab at any time.
08

Children

SeaConnect is not directed at children and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 13. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us using the details below and we'll remove it.

09

Security

Data is stored with Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore, Storage, and Authentication) and access is enforced by server-side security rules — for example, only signed-in users can read live-position data, and only the two participants in a conversation can read its messages. No system is perfectly secure, but no part of SeaConnect's backend is publicly readable by design.

10

Changes to this policy

If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect or how we share it, we'll update the effective date at the top of this page. Continuing to use SeaConnect after a change means you accept the update.
